Your Friends your Perfect Business Partners? |
|
Last year, I was curious to e-business but I never think of starting
my own site. One day, one of my friends, Mr. K. phoned me and asked me
if I am interested in starting my e-business. At that time, he showed
me he was full of energy and determined to be the next Steve Case even
though he did not have any business idea yet. He said that he had several
relevant business relationship and he understood that developing a new
biz is no easy task! He even decided to resign from his job. Driven by
his enthusiasm, I promised to partner with him. I proposed several business
models, discussed with him and then selected one among them.

Then we began to build our site. At the very beginning, everything is
ok but the progress became slower and slower when our ideas became more
concrete. At this time, he re-iterated that how difficult it is to build
a business. He never expected building his own business is a no easy task!
He originally thought that when we created a conceptual business model
and we could then attract a large number of investors. We could then have
sufficient fund to recruit talents and gave them orders! We then sit back
and wait to reap our profit: A billionaire after several months!
Guess what happened next! This guy said bye to me with only one sentence
"I am not suitable to build my own business. I decide to quit and search
for a new job. If you would like to continue, do it yourself". He even
did not mention how to share the cost already spend! One and a half month
later, he was still enjoying his life at home.
Disappointed and furious!! BUT it's a good lesson: You must select a
very good partner or else don't partner with anyone! Friendship is not
reliable in this respect.
Time is valuable. Internet time is much more valuable because it is faster.
Selecting a wrong partner can cost you a lot. From this lesson, I believe
that a good partner should possess the following characters:
- A good partner must be responsible to shareholders, clients, and
himself.
- A good partner must know what he really wants. You must also need
to examine why he or she wants to start a business. If the reasons
are "being your own boss, you can enjoy your life", or "boss is the
king", don't partner with this guy.
- A good partner understands the difficulties in establishing a business
and is persistent to overcome any possible problem. Ask your potential
partner shows you evidence that he is persistent to overcome problems
and not to escape from problems!
- A good partner must share a similar or even the same business vision
with you.
- A good partner must possess some expertise you don't have. Combining
with your skills, it creates synergy.
- A good partner must not be a lazy guy, and always want to get achievement
as fast as possible. It creates a drive to force all parties to work
hard.
- A good partner must have ideas and not afraid to make decisions.
Otherwise, you will find that you are only working with yourself or
working with a subordinate.
- A good partner must have a relatively high E.Q. This is especially
important when difficulties arise.
- A good partner must be brave enough and can find opportunities among
the threats.
Wish you could have a good partner!
