What is the #1 topic people search for on the Internet?
If you guessed 'sex,' you're dead wrong.
It's 'mp3.' (For all of you who are not familiar with the lingo, mp3
is an audio file format that allows people to listen to CD-quality music
and recordings online.) And even more amazing is the fact that mp3 has
been the #1 searched term for at least a few months now. So if you were
interested in building a site that would attract great traffic and advertisers,
developing one around an mp3 theme would definitely be an intelligent
move. In fact, any time you build a Web site around a particular trend,
you have a great chance of it being successful. After all, these are topics
that are in the forefront of peoples minds.
THE QUESTION IS... How do you build and profit from a trendy site? Here
are a few suggestions for tracking and taking advantage of the trends-
1) Find out what people are looking for the most in search engines.
Software Solutions(http://www.softwaresolutions.net/free.htm)
puts out a freeware program called The Word Market. The program monitors
major search engines, and tells you what people are looking for in real-time.
But even better, you can create a report containing the most popular search
terms, in descending order. So after a couple of days of steady monitoring,
you will have developed a database of terms and phrases that people have
the most interest in. These are basically the trends you're looking for.
2) Once you determine the most frequently searched phrases, decide
how you want your site to capitalize from the trends.
For example if you notice that 'Mariah Carey' is the number 10 searched
term, you can profit from this by developing a Web site that sells nothing
but Mariah Carey CD's, tapes, posters, videos, hair strands, and whatever
else you can think of. Or if 'maps' seems to fall in the top 20, you could
build a directory of nothing but map-related Web sites. And while we're
brainstorming, what about a site that featured nothing but map books?
That would be easy to put together. All you'd have to do is become an
affiliate of one of the major online bookstores, and set up the site.
It might take you week to get everything ready. And look... you now have
a site, that rides off of a major trend!
3) Make it all stick with a catchy domain name.
Still going with the example of developing a Web site that sells nothing
but map books, you can name it something like Map Bookzone. The matching
domain (http://www.MapBookzone.com) is still available - (at least at
the time of this writing). When choosing a domain, it's best to pick one
that has at least one of your main keywords in it. Sometimes it'll give
you a leg up in the search engines, and sometimes it won't. (Those search
engines can be so fickle!) But when it does, at least you'll have the
automatic advantage. Now that wasn't so bad, was it?
